Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items allow players to raise the level of equippable items like weapons, armor, and trinkets above a certain threshold. They can be obtained at any item upgrader NPC using the appropriate currency.
Upgrade components are inserted into equipment to provide attribute bonuses and extra effects. Most of these upgrades are slot-restricted however some are universal.
Rerolling
In Diablo 4, a player can roll back an upgrade for an item. This is done through the Level Up mechanic, which pauses the game and displays a list of four randomly chosen upgrades. There's no tenable game design solution to the problem of the "not worth it" feeling that some players feel about upgrading certain items. In ideal scenarios, the game would give more information about upgrades in its compare interface, for instance "X stats gained and X stats lost." This is not practical to implement because of the complexity of the process. There simply isn't enough space in the UI to make it work.
An alternative solution is to create an application that will check the upgrade requirements of an item before allowing it to be upgraded.
